Molecular Detection of Brucella spp. DNA in Patients with Manifestations Compatible with Emotional Disorders

چکیده
Objectives: Human brucellosis is a common zoonosis in Greece and an important Public Health issue. Its true incidence is likely to be higher than reported due to underreporting and misdiagnosing of chronic forms which can manifest with depression and other neuropsychiatric symptoms. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible presence of Brucella DNA in the blood of patients with emotional disorders who did not have acute brucellosis or a diagnosis of chronic brucellosis. Methods: From March 2009 to May 2009, inhabitants of a Greek region endemic for brucellosis were examined and grouped as “patients” and “controls” respectively on the basis of the presence or absence of a diagnosis of emotional disorder. A total of 78 whole blood samples were obtained and analyzed by Polymerase Chain Reaction using specific

Molecular Diagnostic Methods of Brucellosis: a Note on Pitfalls
Clinical manifestations of the brucellosis may show extensive appearance because of its wide signs and symptoms. Patients with brucellosis are usually symptomatically treated by using different antibiotics at private clinics due to misdiagnosis of clinical laboratory findings specially those chronic forms. These subjects will have been hospitalized with a complicated form of signs after changin...
متن کاملComparing Rapid and Specific Detection of Brucella in Clinical Samples by PCR-ELISA and Multiplex-PCR Method
Background: Rapid diagnosis and differentiation of Brucella is of high importance due to the side effects of antibiotics for the treatment of brucellosis. This study aimed to identify and compare PCR-ELISA as a more accurate diagnositc test with other common molecular and serological tests. Methods: ...
متن کاملDetection of Brucella spp. in the Sheep and Goats Milks from Southeastern Iran Using Culture and PCR
Introduction: Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the members of the genus Brucella. This bacterium is transmitted to humans through exposure to infected animals or via consumption of contaminated dairy products. Cultivation of the bacteria or amplification of its DNA using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) are conventional diagnostic approaches for definitive identification of Brucella i...
متن کاملDevelopment of a Differential PCR Assay for Detection of Brucella abortus and Brucella melitensis: an Analytical Approach for Monitoring of Brucella spp. in Foods of Animal Origin
Background: Classical bacteriological detection of Brucella species from food, and environment is routinely carried out based on morphological and biochemical characteristics. However, for increasing specificity and sensitivity of species identification methods, development of a molecular assay is necessary that was main aim of this study. Methods: Panel of some reference strains belonging to ...
متن کاملComparison of Dot-ELISA with microbial culture for detection of Brucella spp. in clinical specimens
Definitive diagnosis of brucellosis is made by isolation of the causative agents, which is a timeconsumingprocedure. To evaluate the efficacy of Dot-ELISA for detecting brucellae in clinical samples, 94different specimens taken from animal origin were cultured on brucella selective culture media and colonieswere identified biochemically. The specimens were also examined after centrifugation by ...
